Here is a comparison of mentions in books from 1850 to 2008 of three of the leading American political figures of the pre-Civil War era, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and John C Calhoun with two figures active at the same time but less well known in that era, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Take a look at the trend over time.
