here. Oddly enough, despite popular belief,
Brown v Board of Education did not overrule the holding in
Plessy v Ferguson (1896) which ruled that segregation was not unconstitutional if equal facilities were provided to both races, the "
separate but equal" doctrine. The 1954 Court simply held that the doctrine did not apply in the field of education.
