Oddly enough, despite popular belief, Brown v Board of Education did not overrule the holding in Plessy v Ferguson (1896) which ruled that segregation was not unconstitutional if equal facilities were provided to both races, the "separate but equal" doctrine. The 1954 Court simply held that the doctrine did not apply in the field of education.
