Mary Wilson passed last night at the age of 76, one of the original members of The Supremes, who had a dozen #1 singles. And, I'll add, back in the 60s I thought she was pretty cute.
The Supremes (L to R): Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard
Ten of those singles were written by Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland. In addition they composed Heat Wave and Nowhere to Run for Martha & The Vandellas and all of the Four Tops hits, including the greatest of all the Motown songs, Reach Out (I'll Be There).
My two Supremes favorites:
Stop In The Name of Love (1965), with its dramatic opening.
You Keep Me Hangin' On (1966) which was deliberately written in a rockier mode designed to appeal to Beatles fans (and it did!).
