From Curtis Mayfield in the early 70s. Mayfield was a member and songwriter with The Impressions prior to launching a successful solo career in 1970. His best known contribution to The Impressions was the uplifting People Get Ready. Move On Up, with its inspirational message and pulsing rhythm, was one of his biggest solo hits.
While performing onstage in Brooklyn in 1990, a lighting tower fell on Curtis, leaving him paralyzed. He died in 1999.
