Christopher Columbus' view of the world and of his proposed voyage across the Atlantic to Cipangu and Cathay. The Portuguese, who had already pioneered the route around Africa to the Indian Ocean had no interest in going west out into the Atlantic and, like most others who had studied the matter, thought Columbus was vastly underestimating the circumference of the Earth and declined to fund his expedition. They were right. Columbus was fortunate to find other takers in Ferdinand and Isabella of Castille and Aragon.
