Come To My Room In A Half Hour And Bring Some Rye Bread
THC doesn't know about you, but that line still works for me. Jimmy Durante in The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942) from the play by George S Kaufman and Moss Hart.
Monty Woolley plays Mr Whiteside and Mary Wickes is Nurse Preen; watch how well she plays her reaction to Durante and catch the little skid she executes during her exit. After appearing on Broadway in the play, this was her first film role. She went on to appear in hundreds of movies and TV shows over the next 50 years.

Great nostalgia piece. Mary Wickes did a good job as the nosey hotel clerk in White Christmas. dm
ReplyDeleteI love this movie & this scene sure works for me too. Mary Wickes was wonderful in everything. It's probably the stage experience, but when she walks into the scene, you watch HER. I don't care what the movie was, she always shined. She played a nurse in NOW, VOYAGER. Bette Davis's character said she suspected that she might be a treasure...I KNOW that she was. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteThat's my favourite line in the movie. Makes me laugh just to think about it.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favorite movie lines.
ReplyDeleteI laughed and laughed
ReplyDeleteRye bread to soak up the juicesfrom tasty oils left on the pan of fried pork hops and onions
A sexy comment to say you thrill me
I always wondered why Jimmy Durantes character is immediately smitten with Mary Wicks. I just watched it again, and when he picked her up, I saw their noses in silhouette, and it just now occurred that was why he fell in love with her because they have the same nose. Anyone else notice this? Can’t tell you how many times I have watched it and it just now hit me.
